This is one aspect in which the show is unique. In The Hounds of Baskerville, he figures out that ‘hound’ is the acronym H.O.U.N.D via a mind palace sequence that wouldn’t look out of place in a marvel movie.Īn audition clip for doctor strange, perhapsĪnd in The Final Problem, he can’t even tell that there is no glass between him and his sister, Eurus. Secondly, Sherlock is either inhumanly clever, or unforgivably stupid, depending on what the plot requires. Anderson, too, was once on her side, but then became one of Holmes’ biggest champions. Sally Donnovan (the only recurring black character) is painted as an ‘unreasonable bitch’ for reacting to his constant insults as any sane person would. He doesn’t even remember Lestrade’s name, who risks his career for him. He treats everyone around him like dirt, and the narrative forgives him, because he’s oh-so clever. And while I am all for bad characters (I stuck around so long for Moriarty, after all), he’s just plain irritating to watch. The show crumbles under the weight of its overarching connections. Sherlock’s childhood dog is not his childhood dog, it’s a boy who was murdered by his criminally insane sister, who convinced Moriarty to go after him in the first place. Moriarty is responsible for every single crime under the sun, and despite his omnipotence and clear advantage over Sherlock., unceremoniously commits suicide for uncertain reasons. Mary Morstan is a killer for hire whose pasts is coming for her. And because the stories are connected, everything else has to be connected too. Repeatedly, the show tries to shoehorn disconnected original short stories into a single narrative, and fails. It ends up having the satisfaction of neither. The issue is that the show is caught in an uncomfortable limbo between a 21st century action hero, and a 19th century detective.

While Doyle’s short stories were self contained, Sherlock has an overarching narrative, building up to a Big Bad Villain like a video game, or a comic book. The show’s undoing is evident in this first episode. Then he and John merrily jaunt back to 221B, after we’re shown that Sherlock’s ‘enemy’ is in fact his brother.

The episode ends when the murderer gasps out ‘Moriarty’ while being tortured by Sherlock. Its loosely based on A Study in Scarlet, and just how loosely based is evident in the first ten minutes when Sherlock arrogantly shoots down the idea that ‘Rache’ stands for ‘Revenge’ in German-which is the answer in the actual story. We are introduced to Sherlock in A Study in Pink.
